You Were Never There

You Were Never There
©2010 Rick Cheadle

Father and son night at my grade school gym
All my friends were there, with their fathers next to them
I knew you probably wouldn’t make it
So I walked there by myself
I snuck right past the teachers
And hid underneath the bleachers

Watched my best friend
Johnny sharing laughs with his dad
That’s my neighbor Bobby
See him hugging his dad
Living through my friends
Pretending that you cared
I wish I had the real thing
But You Never Was There
No Daddy
You Were Never There

Graduation Day was finally here
I looked out to the crowd and see your empty chair
I thought if I made you proud
you might just come around
To you it’s just another day
Another reason to stay away

Watched my best friend
Johnny sharing laughs with his dad
That’s my neighbor Bobby
See him hugging his dad
Living through my friends
Pretending that you cared
I wish I had the real thing
But You Never Was There
No Daddy
You Were Never There

All I ever wanted was to be loved dad
Spending all these days thinking what we could’ve had
All I ever wanted was to be loved dad
The way I feel inside is much deeper than sad
